Description

Toto''s 40 year celebration brings them to Amsterdam, where they thrill the crowd with a selection of classics, new songs and rarely played deep cuts. The set bridges those 40 years right at the open, with their newest rocker "Alone" opening the set, leading right into the instantly familiar piano and guitar intro of "Hold The Line" from their 1978 debut. Deep cuts, including "Lion", "Lea" and "Dune (Desert Theme)" are included, along with their classics "Africa" and "Rosanna".

Toto’s performance in this concert is brilliant, but watching this video of it is a frustrating experience. As a huge Toto fan, it is especially difficult for me to say that about this concert because the band has a stellar lineup of outstanding musicians playing some of my very favorite Toto songs in the setlist.

While this concert sounds fantastic and has some special moments that fans will certainly appreciate, the majority of the video coverage is plagued by frantic, unmotivated camera cutting, and overused, repetitive crowd shots.

The Director consistently cuts away from the musicians when we want to see them play. Cutting away from Lukather during his guitar solo is a sin anyway, but to do it to show someone holding up their cell phone? Such choices, I feel, are insulting to the viewer.

The video also has its share of bad edits (Joe’s hat changes mid song, Shannon is shown crashing a cymbal when none is actually played) and some out-of-focus camera work. It’s very poor video coverage in comparison to Toto’s previous releases, especially 2007’s “Falling In Between.” Eagle Vision, who normally has a stellar track record of quality video releases, really dropped the ball on “40 Tours.”

I’ll likely only listen to this one for the brilliant performance by one of my most favorite bands. In fact, just buy the Double Audio CD. It will be a more enjoyable experience.

I''ve been a fan since the 1st album when it came in as a promo in the record store where I worked (I still have it). Although I have every Toto album I''m not the total Toto afficianado. I do know that this DVD is very well done as far as the shows production, filming, sound etc. From the packaging to ease of use it''s top notch throughout. They also break into many seldom played (live) tracks and try and hit upon every album. The only track I don''t agree with, although done well, is " While My Guitar Gently Weeps" - no reason for a George Harrison cover on a Toto DVD especially with all the output that they have. I enjoyed this DVD although a few luls (mainly the acoustic songs), a must for any Toto or AOR fan! Buy it!

While most people probably don''t even know what a DVD Audio disc is, those of us who do are very careful when ordering. The claim that this is a DVD Audio disc is made on multiple occasions on this product page, and a warning is even given that buyers need to know that it is DVD AUDIO (not a normal video DVD). Imagine my surprise then, when the disc turned up clearly marked DVD VIDEO. NOT what I wanted, and pathetic that this sort of thing happens. Terrible lack of respect for discerning customers!

Is anyone else experiencing this problem? Man, it''s frustrating!!!
It would be good to hear I''m not the only one experiencing this sync problem!

A highlight for me is seeing (?) and hearing Shannon Forrest on the drums! He has a lot of shoes to fill following Simon Phillips!!!

2018 was a banner year and the 40th Anniversary for TOTO who celebrated the occasion by embarking on their longest world tour in years. This live performance was filmed in front of a sold-out crowd exceeding 18,000 fans at the Ziggo Dome in Amsterdam. TOTO performed a wide range of songs, including hit singles, rarely performed live deep cuts, and two recently recorded tracks which appeared on their new Greatest Hits album (40 Trips Around The Sun). Also included is the “40 Tours Featurette,” a brand new interview with band members: Steve Lukather, David Paich, Steve Porcaro, and Joseph Williams. Its always particularly poignant when Toto play live that they still fully recognize and pay homage to their former band members who have departed this earth. Such it is on this DVD performance as Jeff Porcaro and Mike Porcaro’s contributions to the band’s musical legacy are fondly remembered.

If you''re a fan of good musical quality, skilled musicians with their souls shining through, then have some fun with this concert. Yeah, everybody''s old and could lose a few pounds (like me), but the music is the thing and Toto delivers. I thought the mix was just fine, right amount of each instrument, good audience/room tone. The highest praise I can give any concert mix is that I just did not notice it! I never thought, why the hell don''t I hear the drummer, or why is the vocal too loud, or anything of that nature. When I can just sit back and enjoy the show, this old sound & video engineer says, great job. Play this on a pair of JBLs, not a set of crappy "ear buds," and it''s as good as being there.

Toto celebrate their 40th anniversary in blistering style here. Other than the ‘must play’ classics, this is a setlist brimming with deep cuts, and as someone who has seen them so often I can honestly say I was grateful for this. In 2015 they gigged several tracks from XIV, and although I’d love them to have been on this setlist too, simply because then they’d have appeared on this Blu-Ray, I understand there were reasons why that could not be the case. I guess I missed my chance to hear Chinatown live, but what we got here was simply magnificent. I was fortunate enough to see them last year at both the Royal Albert Hall (THE best night I think I’ve experienced following this band) and in Manchester, but here we get the added bonus of Stranger in Town which had been dropped from the set before they came to London. Too many highlights to mention, but for me Lion has now rocketed to become one of my all-time favourite ‘live’ Toto songs – and hats off the Joseph Williams especially on this tune. I also loved the fact that the end result was gimmick free – no split screens, no obscure monochrome, no frantic camera work. Just pure sound and action, which is all you really need. In the three years since I first saw him with the band, Shannon Forrest has really found his own voice in this band. Of their other drummers he is clearly the closest to the late Jeff Porcaro, but I think on this tour he made the seat his own and set his own mark on the band’s superlative live performances. Shem on bass and magnificent vocals is a real find, and seemed to feel at home and became an immediate favourite. The old stagers, Lenny and Warren (great to have sax back on stage, together with his brilliant voice) contribute wonderfully to the overall wave of sound. A superb setting and magnificent night saw the four main men, Luke, Steve P, Paich and Joe, do what they do best (and better than most). Unlike many bands who film several nights on a tour and choose the best one, Toto give themselves once chance to get it right. As usual, they delivered. Hopefully those youngsters in the huge 18,000 audience will have the opportunity to see Toto again, because you can never get enough of musical genius.

I love TOTO since 1978. I have all their BLU-RAY concerts. I think this one is the least enjoyably. I am talking about the whole concert. It is fantastic until the acoustic set. That is simply boring , but I am not a fan of acoustic sets for rock bands. For me the 35th anniversary concert is the top. The song selections are much better on that one then on this one. Plus , the sound quality is not the best here. Too flat the whole sound. I have no idea why these bands play acoustic , sit down and lay back with the music. TOTO is a rock band and I want them to rock. I only review this Blu- ray , this specific concert. These guys are awesome and fantastic musicians. Anyway, if you want the best concert TOTO had on BLU-RAY , buy the 35th anniversary show.

I''m a massive fan of Toto, but this BluRay album is the most disappointing of all the Toto videos I have in my collection. Joseph Williams gives a completely lacklustre performance throughout the show, totally void of any emotion or drive in his voice or presentation. It''s just as if he has no interest in being there or in what he''s doing. Compare him to Bobby Kimball whose vocal range and performance on stage was dynamic, the two are like chalk and cheese! Clearly the band misses the musical ability and personality of both Mike Porcaro (RIP) and Simon Phillips, whose tremendous musical skills always shone through. In fairness, Shem Von Schroeck contributes admirably to the vocal harmonies, propping up Williams'' lack of range to some degree, but for all he may be a competent enough bass player, he''s not in the league of Mike Porcaro or indeed previous deputising bass players, Leland Sklar or Nathan East. Shannon Forrest is apparently a respected drummer, but his performance on this video sadly doesn''t confirm that. He appears to be there "just doing a job" without much enthusiasm. David Paich and Steve Porcaro are both able to demonstrate their excellent keyboard skills as usual, but Steve Lukather, a brilliant guitarist, doesn''t come across in his usual dynamic way. Maybe he''s not feeling the vibe now that Mike and Simon are no longer there to inspire him. He previously had some problems when Bobby was in the band, but he must feel the massive difference in lead vocal delivery with Bobby no longer part of the team. I''m pleased to have this video in my Toto collection, even if it''s only to draw a comparison and remind me what a brilliant band they once were. Unfortunately that''s for all the wrong reasons!
